Ok: 10,000 tables can't be wrong. What about 100,000?

A developer of MySQL (or should i say Sun) pointed me to an interesting article about a very special MySQL performance tuning idea for MyISAM tables with a lot of concurrent writes. Lately at a customer's site i saw a MySQL DB with 118,000 tables. The thrilling bit was that the configuration of the MySQL DB was only allowing for 800 MB of main memory and 256 open tables. And it still worked (a little slow admittedly). Congratulations to MySQL for giving the world such an indestructible database!

By the way, a SHOW TABLES LIKE 'users' (fixed column name, no need to actually enumerate all the 236,000+ files in the directory) in that same database reproducibly took more than 1.5 seconds...

Changing this to a SHOW COLUMNS for the table turned it down to 0.00 s.

We should have probably better used blackhole right from the beginning.
